EFFEKTE Lecture Series 2024/2025
06/18/2024 – 01/14/2025
What does freedom of information mean? Why are we susceptible to fake news? Does Artificial Intelligence endanger certain groups of people? And what about the freedom of science and education?
These questions will be addressed from mid-June at the EFFEKTE science series under the motto “Freiheit im Wandel – Chancen und Grenzen für Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft” (Freedom in Transition – Opportunities and Limits for Science and Society). One topic will be the freedom that the German Basic Law guarantees us while being threatened at the same time – a freedom that we often have to fight for, defend, and constantly renegotiate. Especially in these times of crisis, we need a shared understanding of freedom in our society. Therefore, Science Tuesday is taking a year-long look at a highly topical issue that affects us all.
Science Tuesdays from June 2024 to May 2025 – with FZI researchers
From June 2024 until the EFFEKTE Science Festival in May 2025, there will be twelve evenings of hands-on science – vivid, intelligible, up-to-date. Representatives from Karlsruhe universities and research institutions will present themselves on “Science Tuesday”. They provide insights into their work in a mix of keynote speeches, discussions, interactive formats, exhibits, and workshops.
FZI researchers will also provide insights into science – from June 18, 2024 to January 14, 2025.
Agenda
June 18, 2024
From 7:30 p.m.
“Künstlich und intelligent: Wie KI funktioniert und was sie kann” (Artificial and Intelligent: How AI Works and What it Can Do)
It has the potential to be the next technological revolution: Artificial Intelligence (AI). There are many questions to be addressed at this science evening. Prof. Dr. Steffen Kinkel from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences (HKA) will shed light on how trustworthy AI actually is. Using examples from everyday life, he will show where AI arrives at dubious decisions.
Dr. Markus Müller from the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) shows the advantages of intelligent and AI-supported video surveillance.
Prof. Dr. Jan Niehues from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) takes visitors on a journey into the heart of AI: Does AI really understand a text or just issue a parrot-like reproduction of what has already been said?
FZI Director Prof. Dr. Jörn Müller-Quade will talk about data protection and good technical solutions.
August 27, 2024
From 7:30 p.m.
“Gesellschaft im Krisenmodus – wie stark wir polarisiert sind” (Society in Crisis Mode – How Strongly Polarized We Are)
COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, and the climate catastrophe: one crisis follows the next. Because people have to find an attitude to this, trust in democratic institutions, but also in the media and social cohesion, is being put to the test. Is it possible to measure how far people have drifted apart? Our innovative long-term study by the House of Participation shows the state of the social climate and divisions in the country and which political groups are benefiting from the anger of many citizens. FZI Department Manager Dr. Jonas Fegert and the Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab will present the study’s key findings. They will then discuss with the visitors possible solutions for the often unbearable political reality and the role that science plays in describing polarization during times of crisis.
January 14, 2025
From 7:30 p.m.
„Meet a Robot“
In January, our robot experts will offer a special encounter format: visitors can experience modern service and assistance robots live – such as the seal-shaped care robot Paro or the walking robot Spot. There is also the opportunity to talk to our robotics experts, such as FZI Department Manager Tristan Schnell.
