Department Manager
Intelligent Systems and Production Engineering

Georg Heppner is Head of the Robotics Department (Interactive Diagnostics and Service Systems (IDS)) and is therefore the contact person for all robotics topics at the FZI as well as potential projects. His main topics are capability-based cooperation between heterogeneous robots, behaviour trees, ROS, design of innovative service robotics applications as well as walking and flying robots.

Georg Heppner studied Computer Engineering at Wedel University of Applied Sciences from 2006 to 2009, specialising in hardware-related topics. During his master's degree at KIT from 2009 to 2012, he deepened his computer science studies with a focus on robotics and embedded systems and supervised the LAURON IV walking robot as a student assistant at the FZI. From March 2012 to 2015, he was a research assistant at the FZI in the robotics department.
From 2015 to 2024, Georg was deputy head of the robotics department.

During his time at the FZI, his work included hardware-related activities such as the development & construction of the LAURON V walking robot, further development of the autonomy capabilities of mobile robots such as LAURON as part of the Spacebot Cup 2013 and 2015 or of industrial robots, e.g. in the EuRoC project, as well as the reusability of robot software, e.g. as part of the ReApp or SeRoNet project.
