From 2006 to 2011, Fabian Rigoll studied industrial engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). He finished his studies in 2011 with a degree in industrial engineering.

From 2012 to 2016, Fabian Rigoll worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods (AIFB) at KIT. During this time, he worked on international and national research projects in the field of energy informatics. He focussed on the management of energy data and the associated effects on privacy and data protection. He finished his PhD with the topic "User-oriented Energy Data Management" in 2017.

Fabian Rigoll has been working at the FZI Research Center for Information Technology since 2017. He initially was responsible for the department for Intelligent Information and Communication in Technical Systems (IIK) of the research division Intelligent Systems and Production Engineering (ISPE). Since October 2018, he has been responsible for the research division Information Process Engineering (IPE) in cooperation with Dr. Katharina Glock.

The FZI appoints two ombudspersons to ensure good scientific practice. Since 2024 Fabian Rigoll and Dirk Achenbach have held that role jointly.
