Position Paper "Intelligent Robotics for the Future" Published

Research focus: Applied Artificial Intelligence

At the European Robotics Forum 2025, the Minister of Economic Affairs, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, presented the position paper “Intelligent Robotics for the Future” of the innovation ecosystem AI-based Robotics Baden-Württemberg. It resulted from a discourse between the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism and the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts with the diverse landscape of stakeholders in AI-based robotics in Baden-Württemberg. The FZI and 28 other stakeholders support the vision that Baden-Württemberg should become the leading innovation region for intelligent human-robotics systems by 2035.

The position paper “Intelligent Robotics for the Future” was presented to the public for the first time at the European Robotics Forum (ERF), which took place in Stuttgart from March 25 to 27, 2025. The position paper, published by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism and the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts, pursues a clear vision: By 2035, Baden-Württemberg will be the leading innovation region for intelligent human-robot systems.

Human-centered, intelligent robotics offer excellent innovation potential for the economy of Baden-Württemberg. The state is excellently positioned in many fields of application in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, logistics, and medical technology and can secure important competitive advantages through AI-based robotics. Other fields of application, such as agriculture and construction or household and care, offer great potential for the future.

“The most important meeting of the European robotics industry is in Germany for the first time. With over 1,400 participants, the European Robotic Forum offers an ideal platform to present the high-tech location of Baden-Württemberg to the European robotics community. Strong growth is expected in the market for AI-based robotics in the upcoming years. We want to take advantage of this enormous economic opportunity for our country.”

Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism

With the position paper “Intelligent Robotics for the Future,” Baden-Württemberg is positioning itself as a center of innovation for intelligent human-robot systems.

Baden-Württemberg is one of the leading regions in Europe in robotics and automation. With a strong industrial base, world-famous companies, and excellent research, our state plays a central role in developing innovative robotic solutions. In the areas of Industry 4.0, medical technology, and Artificial Intelligence, business and science jointly drive technological progress. Service robotics is also becoming increasingly important and is seen as an important future market.

To achieve this vision, the stakeholders in the Baden-Württemberg AI-based robotics innovation ecosystem have defined five fields of action. These address the areas of:

Together with the stakeholders of the innovation ecosystem, the fields of action will be further developed in the short to medium term to increase the visibility of AI-based robotics beyond the borders of Baden-Württemberg and position Baden-Württemberg as a strategic partner for modern robotics of the future.

“As an independent, non-university research institution with 40 years of expertise, the FZI has been successfully contributing to this since its foundation with research, development, and transfer in the field of robotics. It is closely networked, internationally visible, and has great expertise in combining the latest hardware, adaptive and modular software, and fast and robust prototype development. As part of The AI LÄND, we want to continue contributing to the Karlsruhe TechnologyRegion’s future development and bring Baden-Württemberg to the top.”
